Aztec is commonly mistaken for the Maya architectural style, although they were two different civilizations. The houses ans religious structures of the Aztecs was different, however, and put great effort into designing their cities. Their temples had four to five layers and instead of destroying structures, they would build directly on top of them. The defining characteristic of their temples is that they appear to be based on mountains, which is due to their belief that mountains stopped rain from hitting their buildings.
