The American Indian tribes Seminole and Miccosukee settled in the Everglades, but they did not disrupt the ecosystem. Early settlers thought of the swamp as worthless, and by the time Florida became a state in 1845, they were already deciding on how to drain it for land. In 1934, the Everglades became a national park.

From 1905 to the 60s, they continued to damage the environment of the Everglades. In the 60s, the government was contemplating putting a international airport on the Everglades, but Marjory Stoneman Douglas organized the Friends of the Everglades, creating a strong 'Save the Everglades' movement.
