Doane Robinson first came up with the grand idea to create this history but Creating Mount Rushmore National Park was not an easy task, and I don't just mean the carving part. The bill to create this park had to go through many important people to get passed. This bill even got rejected twice before it was finally signed by the Governor of South Dakota, Governor Gunderson on March 5th, 1925. After this challenge was overcome a new challenge came with the funding of it. Gutzon Borglum, the carver, assured the people of South Dakota that they would not have to pay a cent so he had to go to other means to get the money for this memorial. He then decided to dedicate the mountain to President Coolidge and had a big event for him. Well this event went over very well because while giving a speech, President Coolidge promised to fund the building of Mount Rushmore. Over time the creator Robinson lost touch with the project and was soon taken off the list of names to serve on the commission. Due to Borglum's and many other citizens hard work Mount Rushmore was declared a completed project on October 31, 1941.

Rushmore Before Construction

One of the many reasons why Mount Rushmore does have so much history in it is because of the reasons why these four presidents were chosen. One of the most prominent presidents craved is George Washington. He was the very first president of the United States. He also lead the colonists in the American Revolutionary War to independence from Britain. You could say that Washington fathered our great nation entirely. The next president on the monument is Thomas Jefferson our 3rd president. He was the author of the Declaration of Independence and also did the Louisiana purchase which doubled the size of America. Theodore Roosevelt the 26th president elected and was known as a president of the people. He was a great asset to the economic decline in our nation at that time and tended to the needs of the common working man. The last president to be carved was Abraham Lincoln. He was our 16th president and kept our national afloat during the civil war and abolished slavery. Thinking about all of this great history and the impact that these 4 faces had on our nation really opens your eyes to the great country we live in and how lucky we are.
