Why is Antarctica in need of preservation?

Antarctica is a very important natural laboratory. Up to 10,000 people a year work on scientific studies in Antarctica. We have to make sure that these visitors have the smallest impact on the environment. We make sure that waste from research stations is correctly disposed of, that chemicals are not introduced into the environment and that wildlife is not harmed.
