Work on the massive 555 foot tall building began in 1848 after enough funds had finally been raised to build it, but it had been planned 65 years prior . Much thought and planning went into how to honor George Washington, and a contest was even held to decide what structure to build. Although, dues to loss of funding, the building was stalled in 1854, and did not pick back up until 1876. Washington Monument

You are actually able to see a difference in color when looking at the Monument due to the stalling of construction. Finally though, in 1884 the building was completed. It has always been a protected area as it was designated a tribute to George Washington. The Washington Monument has stairs and a elevator in it to allow tourists to the top for a breathtaking view.
